An expressive custom script with a bold “S” gives the stadium’s main identity sign a timeless feel that hearkens back to the days of drive-ins and classic ballparks. YDI honed the design of this script until it felt just right – matching the expressiveness of the “S” with well-balanced letterforms to complete the mark.
Signage of the custom “Spartanburg” script mark features dimensional letters with exposed LED lighting for maximum impact both day and night, and is mounted above home plate, creating an iconic landmark for the surrounding neighborhood.
Directional signage throughout the park takes its inspiration from railroad iconography, using classic numerals and familiar inset shapes to aid in wayfinding. The bright, eye-catching palette works in tandem with the Spartanburgers’ brand color scheme and its highlight green.
YDI designed distinct brands for the concessions at Fifth Third Park, continuing the trend of railroad influence. From “Firebox Corner” to “Cabooze,” these brands and their signage offer playful takes on the trains that gave Spartanburg its “Hub City” nickname. For “Chicken Crossing,” YDI incorporated the stand’s sponsor, Bojangles, into signage and graphics.
Large-scale murals at the park pay homage to the city of Spartanburg. A directional mural includes the team’s mascot “Chuck,” complete with conductor hat, in a train-themed panorama. YDI developed this mural through a series of thorough sketches, taking care to incorporate various elements of Spartanburg history.
Nearby in the Atrium, another large-scale mural with a gridded design includes some of the city’s claims to fame, from peaches and Spartanburg’s “Sparkle City” moniker to silos representing the grain industry. Its bright colors and bold lettering provide another iconic backdrop in the concourse.
YDI designed signage for both Team Stores at Fifth Third Park, one exterior facing and one within the concourse. Storefronts feature large-scale window graphics of the team’s food-themed mascots. Internally illuminated letters provide softer lighting, and a bright red underline ties into the surrounding architecture.
The Kids Corner, presented by Spartanburg Medical Center, features a mural wall with climbable replicas of some of downtown Spartanburg’s buildings designed by YDI, as well as a train-themed play area. Elsewhere, a pair of slides wrap around a miniature silo.
The Spartanburgers’ clubhouse pays homage to the team’s affiliate: the Texas Rangers, and features wallcoverings made from archival photographs, large team logo graphics, retired number displays for the Rangers, and an iconic “Hub City” graphic that incorporates an old map of the area.
