These large metal sculptures of retired numbers echo the industrial elements of the “Steel City” of Pittsburgh, combining jersey fonts with a metal I-beam profile that mirrors the bridge behind them. Elsewhere, below the Riverwalk on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a series of 18 large concrete baseballs are adorned with historical logos and the signatures of past Pittsburgh players from the Pirates, as well as the Negro League’s Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords. These monuments honor players who were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, leaving their mark on both the sport and the city.
On the public portion of the Riverwalk, a series of 18 large concrete baseballs are adorned with historical logos and the signatures of past Pittsburgh players from the Pirates, as well as the Negro League’s Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords.
Overhead, YDI brought the Pirates’ past back to life with resurrected historic pennants, seamlessly blending advertisements in with these designs to create a subtle, integrated look that displays sponsorship without detracting from the overall feel of the space.
Custom signage at the Nachorita concession stand incorporates open channel letters and exposed bulbs, recalling the team’s retired number display and Pittsburgh’s industrial past.
YDI infused the brands of other concessions – like Deli Dog, and the Pop’s Plaza area – with elements of the Pirates’ branding such as the team’s iconic “pillbox” hats and their multi-striped design.
YDI designed metal panels throughout the concourse that touch on highlights of team history, from World Series appearances to All-Star games, historic ballparks, and more. Metal benches in the team’s trademark yellow also feature die-cut “P” logos.
YDI designed unique brands that give each concession stand its own distinct flavor and personality. The Skull Bar uses custom typography with a swashbuckling script-like feel to lean into the team’s Pirate moniker.
YDI also designed signage for the facade of the team store, infusing it with the team’s iconic logo and the trio of yellow stripes found on their historic “pillbox” hats.
Large banners hanging vertically from the concourse ceiling highlight MVPs from the team’s past, as well as League Championship years, with Pirates graphics on the reverse – bringing yet another splash of team color to the space.
